Inez Tucker Newkirk, 75, of the 800 block of Meads Road, departed this life July 3, 1996.
She was a native of Wilmington, N.C., but spent the majority of her adult life in Teaneck, N.J. Mrs. Newkirk was a graduate of Alabama's Talladega College and she also received a master's degree from Atlanta University. She was retired from the New York Bureau of Child Guidance, where she served as a psychiatric social worker for 40 years. Mrs. Newkirk served as the founding director of Hackensack, N.J., first Head Start program, where she received a Congressional award for her efforts. She was an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., as well as a nationally recognized championship bridge player. Mrs. Newkirk was also a founding director of the New Jersey Home State Bank, where she served as vice chairperson of the board.
In addition to her busy schedule, Mrs. Newkirk always found time to volunteer her services to many causes that involved children, while raising three children of her own. Mrs. Newkirk was loved by both her family and community and her kind words and loving smile will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her loving husband of over 48 years, William M. Newkirk of Wilmington, N.C.; three sons, Dr. Kenneth Newkirk of Tuskegee, Ala., William P. Newkirk of Teaneck, and Berry Newkirk of Norfolk; two grandchildren; and a host of devoted friends.
In remembrance of Mrs. Newkirk, the family requests that you donate a portion of your time to those who Inez worked so tirelessly for, and who are in most need, the youth and the elderly. A memorial service for Mrs. Newkirk will be held July 8, 1996, in Wilmington, N.C. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
