George C. Magann
PORTSMOUTH - George Clayton ``Clay'' Magann, 86, died July 5, 1996. His devoted wife, Dorothy, preceded him in death. A native of Helper, Utah, he had been a Portsmouth resident since 1943.
Mr. Magann retired from the U.S. Navy in November 1958. After retirement from the Navy, he was employed in the office of the Superintendent of Ship Construction, Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., and the Naval Weapons Station, where he retired from the Federal Government. He was later employed by the Virginia National Bank and the Merchants and Farmers Bank, both in Portsmouth.
Mr. Magann served aboard the USS Arizona, USS Sturtevant, USS Chikaskia, USS Rockbridge, and retired with the rank of commissioned warrant officer. He was instrumental in organizing the Portsmouth Area Chapter of the Retired Officer's Association and also established and organized the Retiree Volunteers in Medical Service (REVIMS) at Portsmouth Naval Hospital.
George is survived by a sister-in-law, Lucy Ringler of Williamsburg and her husband; a sister-in-law, Katherine Morgan; and a brother-in-law, Percy M. Eason Jr. and his wife, of Portsmouth.
The body will be available for viewing today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in Olive Branch Cemetery with the Rev. Robert F. Coefield officiating. Snellings Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is handling arrangements.
