Essie Hayes Fowler, 90, of the 8600 block of Whaleyville Blvd., died July 6, 1996.
A native of Nansemond County, she was a homemaker and the widow of Thomas Horace Fowler. She was a member of Somerton United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Jett Bible Class.
Survivors include a daughter, Helen F. Glenn and son-in-law, Hugo Glenn of Suffolk; a son, Holmes Fowler and daughter-in-law, Lillian Fowler of Suffolk; a daughter-in-law, Marjorie Fowler of Suffolk; a sister, Lemmie Johnson of Bardstown, Ky.; five grandchildren, Carroll Fowler, Joanne Bangley, Tommy Fowler, Sharon Glenn and Captain Steve Glenn; and three great-grandchildren, Sherry Huffman, Mark Fowler and Brian Fowler. She was preceded in death by her mother, Frances Harrell; father, Charlie Hayes, son, Haywood Fowler, and a grandson, Eugene Fowler.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Somerton United Methodist Church by the Rev. J. Charles Dameron. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence and suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Somerton United Methodist Church, c/o Betty Jean Fowler, Treasurer, 8673 Whaleyville Blvd., Suffolk, Va. 23438. Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
