ALBIN R. MECALIS

Albin R. ``Mac'' Mecalis, 80, died Sunday, July 7, 1996, at the Virginia Beach Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. He was the devoted husband of the late Edna L. Spruill Mecalis for 43 years.

A native of Macoupin County, Benld, Ill., he was the son of Joseph and Mary Blazis Mecalis, both deceased. Mr. Mecalis was retired from the U.S. Navy, where he served as a chief quartermaster. He served on several ships, including the USS Satyr and the LST 692, with a citation for distinguished service during the Korean Conflict, and the LSD Casa Grande. After his naval career, he served as Postman for several years with Branch 2819, Virginia Beach, and was a member of NALC.

Surviving are stepchildren, Susanne Harrell Thurman, Linda Harrell Monroe and Michael Thomas Harrell, all of Virginia Beach; sons, Robert T. Mecalis of Deville, La., and Joseph Mecalis of Pineville, La.; and a brother, Bruno P. Mecalis of Spokane, Wash. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Alan G. Reifsnyder officiating. The interment with military honors will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 8 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Haygood United Methodist Church, 4713 Haygood Road, Virginia Beach, Va. 23455.
