John F. Estes Sr.
VIRGINIA BEACH - John Franklin Estes Sr., 95, of the 5600 block of Wesleyan Drive, died July 7, 1996, in Sentara Bayside Hospital, Virginia Beach.
Mr. Estes was born in Mathews County, Va., and was a police sergeant for the City of Norfolk for 35 years before retiring in 1960. He was a member of Spurgeon Memorial Baptist Church, Norfolk where he was a deacon. He was also a member of Fraternal Order of Police and was a charter member of the Norfolk Chapter. Articles pertaining to his police career were published in Reader's Digest and Look Magazine.
Survivors include his wife, Frances M. Estes; a stepdaughter, Barbara E. Estes; three sons, W. Waller Estes, John F. Estes Jr. and John F. Estes III; a sister, Hilda E. Bowie; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. by Dr. Paul Lawson in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. Burial will be in Colonial Grove Memorial Park.
