Building healthy neighborhoods will be a key to creating more jobs in Hampton Roads.
That is why Plan 2007, the job-growth effort endorsed by both the Hampton Roads and Peninsula chambers of commerce, has encouraged citizens to build the region from the ground up, neighborhood by neighborhood.
Five regional task forces that have examined ways to improve the health of neighborhoods will give their reports from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Hampton Public Library, 4207 Victoria Blvd.
It's part of a Plan 2007 Healthy Community Forum meeting.
Without healthy neighborhoods, the thinking goes, corporations will be reluctant to relocate to the region. With healthy neighborhoods, the natural tide of jobs may rise.
Healthy neighborhoods boast low crime, excellent education, individual healthfulness, sound housing and well-developed recreational programs.
Citizens from throughout the region are invited to contribute to the task force discussions.
The five committees deal with crime and safety; education and jobs; health and wellness; housing and infrastructure; and aesthetics and recreation. The task forces have been working since the start of the year.
The results of all the task forces' efforts will feed into a Healthy Community Summit '96, to be held Nov. 21 at Norfolk State University. ILLUSTRATION: TO REGISTER
