A 7 year-old Stumpy Point boy has died as a result of injuries he suffered in an accident 10 days ago.
Jeffrey Turner Brinn had been in a coma since being struck by a car on N.C. 1100 in this fishing village. He died Saturday at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk. He was the son of Cloninda Ruth Hughes and Clarence Brinn III.
North Carolina Highway Patrol Sgt. Craig Garriss said the accident occurred at 7:03 p.m. June 29 when Jeffrey apparently ran into the path of an oncoming car.
``There was a car legally parked on the shoulder of the road,'' Garriss said. ``The victim came around the front of that vehicle, and into the path of the oncoming traffic. The motorist never saw him.''
Garriss said the driver was a family friend and was traveling at a normal speed. No charges were filed.
Graveside services for the child will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens.
Garriss said that with increased summer traffic, motorists and pedestrians should be more aware.
``Parents should make sure that young children always have some type of supervision,'' Garriss said. ``It's always better for young children to have someone older with them. Young children shouldn't get too close to the road.''
``Because it's summer, there are more kids on the road,'' he said. ``When people are driving, they need to look in front, behind, and on both sides. They need to be more aware.''
