WEEKLY BRIEFING

OCEANA AIR SHOW: One of the largest air shows held on the East Coast will be held at Oceana Naval Air Station Sept. 21 and 22. This year's main event will be the six-plane Lima Lima Flight Team in their T-34's. Opening the show will be the Canadian parachute team Sky Hawks. Among other featured acts, the Moscow Aircraft Group will present, for the first time, a two-seater SU-27.

GOLF CLUB OPENS: The new golf club opened July 6 at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. The plantation-style building, which includes a pro shop, dining room, kitchen, men's and women's locker rooms and club storage, overlooks the golf course. More than 70,000 rounds of golf are played, and 125 special events are scheduled, at Little Creek's club each year.

COMINGS & GOINGS

RETURNING:

The destroyer Caron has returned to Norfolk after completing a six-month deployment with the Middle East Force. During the deployment the Caron patrolled the Arabian Gulf, enforcing United Nations sanctions against Iraq and operating in support of Operation Southern Watch.

Military Sealift Command's Big Horn has returned from a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. The Big Horn is manned by a crew of 75 civil service mariners and 21 military service members.

NEW COMMAND

Capt. Stephen Benson assumes command of Oceana Naval Air Station from Capt. William Shurtleff IV in a ceremony at 2 p.m. Friday in Hangar 23 at the air station. Benson reports from Colorado Springs, Colo., where he served as chief of the space systems and requirements division on the staff of the commander-in-chief United States Space Command. Shurtleff's next assignment is to Hawaii, where he will join the staff of the commander-in-chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet as the assistant chief of staff for manpower and personnel.

Capt. Kevin Perkins relieves Rear Adm. Roland Knapp as supervisor of shipbuilding, conversion and repair at Newport News Shipbuilding in a ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Fort Monroe's Continental Park. Perkins' most recent assignment was as commanding officer of the aircraft carrier program office at the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington. Knapp's next assignment is director of the supportability, maintenance and modernization division of the Naval Operations Staff in Washington. by CNB
