James Edis Avera Jr., 80, a native of Macon, Ga., died July 9, 1996, in his residence.

Mr. Avera retired from Civil Service as an inspector at the Naval Base. He was a U.S. Merchant Marine veteran of World War II and a member of Norview Masonic Lodge (NU)113.

Survivors include his wife, Norma C. Avera; a daughter, Teresa A. Leake of Richmond, Va.; three sons, Curtis A. Avera of Virginia Beach, Charles C. Avera of Wicomico Church, Va., James L. Jordan III of Madison Heights, Va.; a sister, Betty A. Justice of Jarvisburg, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday by the Rev. Tom Marsden in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Personal Touch Home Care and Hospice of Virginia, 18 Koger Executive Center, Suite 205, Norfolk, Va. 23509. Masonic rites will be accorded at the chapel.
