Waverly Thomas Lane Jr., 74, of the 1100 block of Chesapeake Ave., died July 9, 1996, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Mr. Lane, a native of South Norfolk, retired from the U.S. Naval Air Station in 1976 after 35 years of service as a progressman. He was a member of South Norfolk Congregational Christian Church, Chesapeake, where he was a former deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of Portsmouth Moose Lodge (NU)898, Disabled American Veterans (Bob Graham Chapter), and past president of South Norfolk Sports Club. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He was predeceased by his parents, Leila Ferebee Lane and Waverly Thomas Lane Sr.; a sister, Bernetta Lane Jarvis; and two brothers, James G. Lane Sr. and Calvin H. Lane Sr.
Survivors include a sister, Leila L. Weeks of Chesapeake; two brothers, William H. Lane of Del Ray Beach, Fla., and Lankford Lane of Chesapeake; 26 nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday by Dr. Willis Dowling and Rev. Amos Eby in Chesapeake Memorial Garden. The family will be at Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, Chesapeake, today from 7 to 8 p.m.
