WINDS AND COOLER WATER SLOW CATCHES FROM OUTER BANKS PIERS

Southwest winds and chilly water along the northern beaches kept pier action to a minimum.

Kitty Hawk Pier reported slow fishing. A few small flounder and sea mullet were taken on Avalon Pier. Anglers on Nags Head Pier caught several small flounder and some sand perch.

Jennette's Pier reported little action during the morning, and only a few mullet landed in the afternoon. A few keeper flounder and some small flounder were taken on Outer Banks Pier.

South of Oregon Inlet, where water temperatures were a little higher than along the northern beaches, Rodanthe Pier fishermen caught small bottom fish and gray trout. Some bluefish were landed from the end of the pier during the morning.

Avon Pier anglers landed plenty of small bottom fish from the dirty water stirred up by strong southwest winds. Strong winds and rough seas caused slow fishing on Frisco Pier. Only a few croaker and small blues were taken.

Surf fishing was slow from Corolla to Oregon Inlet. Some small bottom fish were taken from the inlet's north and south sides.

A few nice sea mullet, some weighing as much as two pounds; small croaker; and a few bluefish were taken in the surf from Rodanthe to Buxton.

Fishing was slow at Cape Point and from Frisco to False Point. Some Spanish mackerel and bluefish were taken along the back side of Hatteras Inlet during the morning.

Inshore trolling was slow around Oregon Inlet. Headboats in the area caught some bluefish and croaker.

Dolphin fishing was good around the 40350 Loran line southeast of Oregon Inlet.

Good numbers of billfish were reported between the 40800 and the 40850 Loran lines in 40 fathoms of water. Releases included seven white marlin on the Surfside, two white marlin and a blue marlin on the Temptress and three white marlin on the Candlewick Lady.

The water temperature was a chilly 57.5 degrees Tuesday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 78 degrees at Avon Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
