The Rev. Morris W. Beeks of the 2900 block of Taylor Road died July 7, 1996, in Maryview Hospital, Portsmouth.
Mr. Beeks was born in Asheville, N.C., and was a retired printer for Containers Corporation of America, Chicago, after 25 years of service. He was a member and associate minister of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Portsmouth, and member of the James Thomas Bible class; and a member of Interdenominational Minister Forum of Portsmouth and vicinity.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy M. Beeks; three sons, Morris W. Beeks Jr. of Los Angeles, Nathaniel Beeks of Aurora, Ill., and Jerome Beeks of Chicago; a sister, Poneise Beeks of Chicago; a brother, Daniel Beeks of Chicago; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; an aunt, Irene Jackson of Chicago; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
The funeral will be conducted Thursday at noon by the Rev. Ben A. Beamer Sr. in Ebenezer Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is in charge. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home will begin at 10 a.m. today. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Thursday.
CHESAPEAKE - Elsie C. Davis, 77, of the 1600 block of Elm Ave., died June 8, 1996. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Rosewood Memorial Park. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel, is in charge. CHESAPEAKE - Waverly Thomas Lane Jr., 74, of the 1100 block of Chesapeake Ave., died July 9, 1996, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Mr. Lane, a native of South Norfolk, retired from the U.S. Naval Air Station in 1976 after 35 years of service as a progressman. He was a member of South Norfolk Congregational Christian Church, Chesapeake, where he was a former deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of Portsmouth Moose Lodge (NU)898, Disabled American Veterans (Bob Graham Chapter), and past president of South Norfolk Sports Club. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He was predeceased by his parents, Leila Ferebee Lane and Waverly Thomas Lane Sr.; a sister, Bernetta Lane Jarvis; and two brothers, James G. Lane Sr. and Calvin H. Lane Sr.
Survivors include a sister, Leila L. Weeks of Chesapeake; two brothers, William H. Lane of Del Ray Beach, Fla., and Lankford Lane of Chesapeake; 26 nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday by Dr. Willis Dowling and Rev. Amos Eby in Chesapeake Memorial Garden. The family will be at Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, Chesapeake, today from 7 to 8 p.m.
CHESAPEAKE - Barbara Yoder Slabaugh, 83, of the 2300 block of Mt. Pleasant Road, died Monday, July 8, 1996, in a local hospital.
Mrs. Slaubaugh was a native of Ohio and the wife of the late Joseph Slabaugh. She was a member of Deep Creek Mennonite Church.
Survivors include a son, Olin Slabaugh; and two daughters, Sharon Zook and Laura Zook; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren, all of Chesapeake.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Mt. Pleasant Mennonite Church by the Rev. Marvin Stutzman. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, from 7 to 9 p.m., today. She was loved and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. CHESAPEAKE - Walter Leon ``Snooky'' Wescott, 58, of the 900 block of Tennyson Lane, died July 8, 1996, in DePaul Medical Center.
Mr. Wescott was a native of Eastville, Va., and the son of Beadie Wescott Hunter and the late Richard Wescott. He was retired owner and operator of Snooky's Soul Food Restaurant on Church St. He had also worked at Riddick Funeral Service for several years. Snooky was very active in athletics and was an original member of the old Carolina Five basketball team.
Survivors include two daughters, JoAnn Graham and Debbie Coleman, both of Norfolk; five sons, Larry Wilkerson of Norfolk, Melvin Wilkerson of Virginia Beach, William Bridges, Micheal Bridges, Dominque Bridges, all of Norfolk; his mother, Beadie Wescott Hunter; his stepfather, Benford Hunter; a sister, Dorothy Wescott Graham of Chesapeake; two brothers, James Wescott of Baltimore, Md., Wayne Wescott of New York; an uncle, Quincy Moore of Chesapeake; two aunts, Gertrud Wescott and Edna Wescott, both of New Jersey; nine grandchildren; sister-in-law, Lolita Wescott of Baltimore; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and special friends.
The funeral will be conducted at noon Friday by Dr. I. Joseph Williams in Antioch Baptist Church, Norfolk. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. The family will receive friends at Riddick Funeral Service from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Friday. CHESAPEAKE - Jessie Louise ``Dot'' West, 63, of the 1400 block of Seaboard Ave., died July 9, 1996, in Chesapeake General Hospital.
She was a native of Scotland County, N.C., and a homemaker who cared for the elderly. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church, Chesapeake.
Survivors include three daughters, Kathy O'Neil of Mt. Olive, Miss., Joyce Anne Bressler of Wilson, N.C., J. Lynn Daughtery of Chesapeake; six sons, Johnny Allen, James Allen, John Henry Allen, and George West Jr., all of Chesapeake, Ronnie Allen of Virginia Beach, and Jimmy Allen of Wilson; 31 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Clayton West.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday by the Rev. Pete Taylor in Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk. NORFOLK - James Edis Avera Jr., 80, a native of Macon, Ga., died July 9, 1996, in his residence.
Mr. Avera retired from Civil Service as an inspector at the Naval Base. He was a U.S. Merchant Marine veteran of World War II and a member of Norview Masonic Lodge (NU)113.
Survivors include his wife, Norma C. Avera; a daughter, Teresa A. Leake of Richmond, Va.; three sons, Curtis A. Avera of Virginia Beach, Charles C. Avera of Wicomico Church, Va., James L. Jordan III of Madison Heights, Va.; a sister, Betty A. Justice of Jarvisburg, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Diamond was a native of Norfolk. He was a member of The Greek Orthodox Cathedral Church of the Annunciation in Norfolk.
Survivors include his mother, Mary Diamond of Norfolk.

Joseph Anthony Glass, U.S. Navy retired, 88, of the 100 block of Dupre Ave., died in Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital on Monday, July 8, 1996.
He was born in Sandfordtown, Ky., and was the son of the late Philip A. and Catherine Piller Glass. Mr. Glass was the loving husband of Marjorie E. Lawrence Glass for 40 years. He was retired from the Navy where he achieved the rank of lieutenant. After his retirement from the Navy, Mr. Glass worked for the Newport Shipping and Dry-dock until he retired. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Father Kealy Council, Fleet Reserve Association Branch (NU)60, life member of the Non Commissioned Officers Association and the Democratic Club.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Phyllis A. Rawls of Norfolk, Karen R. Smith and her husband, John Smith of Norfolk, Catherine E. Shadwick and her husband, Floyd ``Shad'' Shadwick of Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Rosetta Heinrick of Covington, Ky.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews.
A mass of the resurrection for Lt. Joseph Anthony Glass will be held Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, with the Rev. Ron Naylor officiating. The Fleet Reserve Branch (NU)60 funeral ritual will be accorded at 7 p.m. at the church. The family will receive friends at the church from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The family also asked that memorial donations be made to the Holy Trinity Catholic Church Restoration Fund, 175 W. Government Ave., Norfolk, Va. Entombment services will be held in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at 10 a.m. Friday with full military honors accorded at the mausoleum. Mrs. Gray, a native of Norfolk, was retired from Albano Cleaners. She was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Samuel J. Gray; a sister, Lillian Johnson of Norfolk; two adopted daughters, Ethel Mosley of Chesapeake, and Gladys Washington of Norfolk.
The funeral will be conducted at noon Friday in First Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. J.L. White. Burial will be in Rosewood Cemetery. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, N.C. NORFOLK - Clarence B. Harris, 72, of the 7700 block of Armfield Ave., died July 7, 1996, in a Norfolk hospital.
Mr. Harris, born in Alabama, was a master electrician.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Harris; a son, Bruce Harris of Florida; three granddaughters, Heather Harris of Florida, Christie Dinh of Florida and Amber Harris of Massachusetts; and three grandsons, Robert Kalin, Mark Kalin and Aaron Kalin, all of Massachusetts.

Survivors include her daughter, Melinda Ann Launderville and her husband, Lewis Raymond Launderville Jr.; two sons, Samuel Peter McIntyre and David Charles McIntyre; a brother, Kenneth Gilbert Chamberlin; and 15 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday by Pastor Al Day in Bible Baptist Church, 1004 Edgewood Ave., Chesapeake.
NORFOLK - Alma Beatrice Matthews, of the 2200 block of Courtney Ave., died July 8, 1996, in Norfolk Health Care.
Mrs. Matthews, the widow of Ernest L. Matthews Sr., was a homemaker. She was a native of Norfolk and a member of Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church. She was a member of the Ballard-Fepperson Sunday school class and a former member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Ethel L. Payton, Evelyn T. Wright, Ernestine P. Matthews, and Eunice L. Lewis; six sons, Ernest L. Matthews Jr., Robert A. Matthews, Joseph M. Matthews, Edward L. Matthews, James O. Matthews, Jackie B. Matthews; 34 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Charles L. Matthews.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday by the Rev. Michelle Johnson in Bank Street Baptist Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. VIRGINIA BEACH - Dr. Jerry Delmas Cardwell, president of Atlantic University and chair of the board of directors, The Atlantic University Educational Foundation, Virginia Beach, died July 5, 1996, in Elizabeth City, N.C., following an afternoon sail in Albemarle Sound.
He was born in Alexandria, Va., on July 26, 1941 to Lupton Delmas Carwell and Jimmie Williams Cardwell. Dr. Cardwell was educated at the University of Alabama and the University of Maine, receiving his doctorate in Sociology at the University of Utah in 1972. Before assuming the presidency of Atlantic University in January of 1993, he served as vice president for Academic Affairs of Livingston University, Livingston, Ala.; as vice chancellor and acting chancellor, Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia, Wise, Va.; as head of the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work at Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, Ky.; and as chairperson of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Longwood College, Farmville, Va. Dr. Cardwell served currently on the Council of Presidents of the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council, Washington, D.C. He has served in various state higher education committees, including the Council of Chief Academic Officers and the Planning Liaison Group of the Alabama Commission on Higher Education; and the Council of Presidents, Virginia Senior Colleges and State Universities, the General Professional Advisory Committee, and the Instructional Programs Advisory Committee, all of the State Council on Higher Education in Virginia. He taught, researched and published extensively in the fields of social psychology, statistics and research methods, evaluative sociology, philosophy of social science, self concept theory, and sociology of religion. His more recent publications included:
A Rumor of Trumpets: the Return of God to Secular Society, Washington, D.C., University Press of America, 1985; Mass Media Christianity: Televangelism and the Great Commission, Washington, D.C., University Press of America, 1984, and Sailing Big on a Small Sailboat, Dobbs Ferry, New York, Sheridan House Publishing Co., 1992. Dr. Cardwell was the recipient of numerous academic awards, honors and recognition, including the Who's Who Registry of Global Business Leaders, 1992, and Who's Who in American Education, 1990. He was a current member of the Virginia Beach Rotary Club and the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce. He was an Episcopalian and was appointed to the Department of Ministry in Higher Education for the Episcopal Diocese of Alabama in 1991.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Conniff Leonard Cardwell, of Virginia Beach; two sons, Jonathon Alexander Cardwell and Robert Michael Cardwell, of Birmingham, Ala.; a sister, Eleanor Thompson, of Tuskaloosa, Alabama; and a brother, James H. Cardwell, of Birmingham, Ala. Arrangements are being handled by the Johns Ridout Valley Chapel of Birmingham. VIRGINIA BEACH - Louise M. Fisher, 87, of the 4800 block of Pleasure House Road, died July 9, 1996.
Mrs. Fisher, a housewife and loving mother, was the widow of George ``Pinky'' Fisher. She was a native of Elizabeth City, N.C., and a member of Ocean View Baptist Church. She was a member of Nags Head Fishing Association and Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks on Raby Road, Norfolk, (NU)38.
Survivors include a daughter, Joan Weston of Virginia Beach; a brother, Corbin Wilson Davis of Norfolk; two grandchildren, Sharon Barnes and Cathy Downs, both of Virginia Beach; four great-grandchildren, Calvin Barnes, Kyle Barnes, both of Virginia Beach, Shawn Downs, Kelly Bateman. She was predeceased by a brother, William Davis; and a sister, Christine Day Versprille.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Minnie ``Florence'' Griffin, 57, of the 1200 block of Corsair Drive, died July 5, 1996, in Bayside Hospital.
Mrs. Griffin, a native of Rocky Mount, N.C., was a housewife. She was a member of Rock Church, Virginia Beach.
Survivors include three daughters, Vicky Griffin, Brenda Chisholm, Rita Ford; a brother, William Bynum; three grandchildren, Ebony and Anthony Chisholm, Brandom Latimore; two aunts, Naomi Hardy, Mamie Barron; sister-in-law, Gracie Harrell; brothers-in-law, John Griffin and James Griffin; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Minnie Bynum and James Bynum.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in National Baptist Church, 508 Lucas Ave., Norfolk, by the Rev. Edward Smith. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. VIRGINIA BEACH - Christina Johanna Horvath, 96, of the 3700 block of Sentara Way, died July 8, 1996, in a Virginia Beach hospital.
Mrs. Horvath, a native of North Bergen, N.J., was the widow of Joseph Horvath. She was a member of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Maywood, N.J., and American Legion Ladies Auxillary Post (NU)142 in Maywood.
Survivors include a daughter, Christina E. Jones of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two sons, Joseph V. Horvath of Virginia Beach, Albert H. Horvath of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday by Pastor Daniel K. Davey in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel. Burial will be in George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, N.J. The family will greet friends at the funeral home following the service. A graveside service will be held in Paramus Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Reiner officiating.

Mrs. Myers, a native of Portsmouth, was a long standing member of Park Place United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Vernon T. Myers Sr., a Norfolk developer and chairman of the Board Ameritus of the Econo Lodge Corp., a motel chain he originated.
Survivors include a son, Vernon T. Myers Jr. and his wife, Nancy Graham-Myers of Virginia Beach; two granddaughters, Karen A. Custer and Dr. Dana L. Myers; two great-grandchildren, Alyson R. Custer and Stephan P. Custer. This sweet, gentle lady was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

She was the loving mother of Marjorie and Allen Peak; dear grandmother of five; great-grandmother of four; and great-great-grandmother of three.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Charles Henry Vette Sr., 51, of the 1000 block of Colonial Meadows Way, died Monday, July 8, 1996, in a Virginia Beach hospital.
He was born in Staunton, Va., and was a real estate developer. Mr. Vette attended Staunton Military Academy, Virginia Commonwealth University, and East Carolina University. He was also a member of Stonewall United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his parents, Joseph L. and Rebecca Tucker Vette of Staunton; a son, Charles H. Vette Jr. of Harrells, N.C.; two sisters, Patricia Ann Martin of Staunton and Brenda Katherine Stonesifer of Roanoke, Va.; and his former wife, Jackie Osmond of Virginia Beach.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Willie Montrell Wiggins, of the 1400 block of Old Oak Arch, died July 6, 1996, on the 1400 block of Virginia Beach Blvd.
Mr. Wiggins, a native of Virginia Beach, was a cook at Long John Silvers.
Survivors include a son, Gregory Montrell Colarusso of Virginia Beach; his parents, Annie Wiggins and Willie Wiggins, both of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Reshedia Wiggins of Norfolk, Abrian Wiggins of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Regenald Wiggins and Gregory Wiggins, both of Virginia Beach; grandparents, John and Ruth Robertson of North Carolina, Lester and Elizabeth Bridges of Portsmouth; his girlfriend, Maria Colarusso of Virginia Beach; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. Edgar Williams Jr. in First Lynnhaven Baptist Church. Burial will be in Colonial Grove Memorial Park. SUFFOLK - Thomas J. Turner Jr., 58, of the 100 block of Staley Drive, died July 8, 1996.
Mr. Thomas retired from VDOT as a welder after 27 1/2 years and then began working as a custodian for the Norfolk School Board in the SECEP facilities in Suffolk in 1992. He was a native of Southampton County, Va., and a member of Liberty Baptist Church. He served as a trustee and was a member of the William J. Glover Sunday school class. Mr. Turner was an Army veteran. He was predeceased by his father, Thomas J. Turner Sr.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie Greene Turner; his mother and stepfather, Dorothy B. and William Ashley Ellis of Suffolk; three daughters, Anita T. Langston of Suffolk, Deborah T. Beale of Franklin, and Charlene H. Turner of Suffolk; five sisters, Vivian T. Griggs of Suffolk, Evelyn T. Whitehead of Carrsville, Ann E. Tew of Suffolk, Brenda E. Boyce of Suffolk, and Wanda E. He was a native of Hertford County, a member of Center Grove Baptist Church, a graduate of Mars Hill College, and a Paul Harris Fellow.
The widower of Thelma Morris Dilday, he is survived by his daughter, Allie Jane Dilday of Virginia Beach; sisters, Nellie D. Childers of Virginia Beach, Allie D. Fowler of New Bern, Nancy D. Dupree of Angier, and brother, Horace C. Dilday of Ahoskie.

AHOSKIE - James Clarence Early, 93, of the 600 block of N. Curtis St., died July 9, 1996, in Roanoke Chowan Hospital.
Mr. Early was born in Bertie County and was a member of Ahoskie First Baptist Church. He was a retired peanut buyer and a former magistrate for Hertford County. He was the widower of Elizabeth Ruffin Early.
Survivors include two brothers, Carlton Early of Portsmouth, A.J. Early of Ahoskie; two sisters, Rosaleigh Marsh of Suffolk, Doris Cowan of Ahoskie; a sister-in-law, Mary Katherine Early of Ahoskie; and 21 nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Ahoskie Cemetery by Dr. Jesse J. Croom. The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and will assemble at the funeral home at 1:15 p.m. Thursday to go in procession to the cemetery.

HAMPTON - Margaret Frances Watkins, 87, died Saturday, July 6, 1996.
Mrs. Watkins was a native of Richmond. She had been a Hampton resident most of her life.
She was a member of Zion Baptist Church, Hampton, and was a former member of First Baptist Church Lambert's Point in Norfolk for more than 20 years. She was a member of the Northampton Senior Citizens Center. She was predeceased by her husband, Ulysses G. Watkins, a daughter, Emma Jane Watkins, and a son, Ernest H. Watkins.
Survivors include four daughters, Margaret W. Francis, Clara D. Watkins, and Juanita L. Watkins, all of Hampton, and Joyce L. Redding of Norfolk; and a son, Thomas A. Watkins; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; two nieces; two great-nieces; one great-nephew; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today by the Rev. Chauncey Mann in Zion Baptist Church, Hampton. Burial will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Mrs. Watkins will be placed in the church by 9 a.m. today. The procession will leave from 114 E. Cummings Ave. at 10 a.m. today.

Mrs. Upton was a graduate of the University of Michigan and has been an active member of the Alpha Phi Sorority. She was a teacher at the Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she met and married her husband, then a Navy lieutenant. She had devoted her life to her family and to her strong belief in the value of education.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. John H. Upton, president of Rappahannock Community College; a daughter, Katie Cook; two sons, Steve Upton and Mark Upton; four grandchildren; and her sister, Eileen Evans.

She was the beloved wife of the late James Robert Wiley Sr. and the late Ira Robert Myers.
She is survived by three sons, William Joseph Wiley, Walter Thomas Wiley and Jerry Leslie Wiley Sr.; three sisters, Anna Myers, Dora Fritz and Clara Hanby; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, James Robert Wiley Jr.; a sister, Ruth Redifer; and two brothers, Ed and Mel Smith.
