The Navy's top-ranked woman, Vice Adm. Patricia A. Tracey, started Wednesday as chief of naval education and training.
Tracey, 45, was the second woman to rise to three-star ranking in any service. The first was Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Carol Mutter, whose promotion and assignment as deputy chief of staff for manpower was announced earlier this year.
``If you know me, you know this isn't about being first of anything,'' Tracey said at a change-of-command ceremony. ``It is about being the next chief of naval education and training.''
Tracey succeeds retiring Vice Adm. Timothy Wright.
The Bronx, N.Y., native spent much of her career in personnel and training command positions. She never served aboard a ship.
``I joined the Navy in 1970,'' she said. ``Women did not serve aboard ship until 1975 or 1976, and every time I've tried to make one of those moves I've been too old.'' by CNB
