GREAT SNAKES

Snakes Alive! July 21. If you think a Monty Python goes s-s-s-s-s-s, take this advice: Get out of the woods and go to False Cape State Park and hear what Ranger Gary Williamson says about our fine, slithered friends. It's billed as a ``hands-on'' experience. 3:30-6:30 p.m. Shuttle leaves Little Island City Park, 3750 Sandpiper Road, Sandbridge. Cost: $3. 426-7128. Also, 6-9 p.m. Aug. 1 and 3:30-6:30 p.m. Aug. 11.

Snakes Up Close, Aug. 17. There'll be a whole lotta snakin' going on at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, too. Volunteer Bill Rogers explains why snakes are so misunderstood. 11 a.m. to noon, 4005 Sandpiper Road. Free, but it's $4 per vehicle to get into the park, $2 if you're on foot or a bike. 721-2412.

MUSIC

KRAFT Country Tour, July 20. When is a concert worth a 2 1/2-hour drive? When country babes Lorrie Morgan, Pam Tillis and Carlene Carter (pictured) headline it. 7 p.m., Kings Dominion in Doswell. $7 plus park admission ($28.95 adults, $19.95 kids 3-6). I-64 west, I-295 around Richmond, I-95 north. 876-5000.

Reggae on the River, July 26-27. Hooray for the red, green and gold. Musically, you've got reggae giant Burning Spear, ska kings The Toasters (pictured) and dancehall groovers Worl-A-Girl. Culturally, you've got arts and crafts. Gastronomically, you've got . . . Guess. 5-9 p.m. July 26, 2-10 p.m. July 27, Town Point Park, Norfolk. Free. 441-2345.

BEAT FEET

Naval Base Open 8K, Aug. 10. Trophies go to the fleet of feet. Get it? FLEET of feet. Nevermind. Make like the wind or make like a tourist. The course winds past the Atlantic Fleet's finest and stately Admiral's Row. 8 a.m., Norfolk Naval Station. Call 444-2276/7218 for fees, deadlines and directions.

Dog Days of Summer 5K and 10K, Aug. 17. This is a way to beat the heat? It's No. 3 in the six-race Newport News Centennial Race Series. 7:30 a.m. (5K), 8:15 (10K), 8:20 (1-mile fun run), Anderson Field House, Fort Eustis. Call 878-2328/2587 for - oh, you know the drill.

CHILLING OUT

National Ice Cream Day, July 21. Couldn't come at a better time of year. Barnes & Noble is hosting a to-do for the wee ones. You can go one-on-one with a half-gallon of whatever moves you. 2 p.m., 4485 Virginia Beach Blvd. Registration required. 671-2331.

MOVIES

``A Time to Kill,'' July 24. John Grisham's first, and some say best, novel finally goes Hollywood. Matthew McConaughey is an idealistic lawyer knee-deep in Southern corruption. Hey, there's a plot twist.
