Annie Leigh Barrett Spratley, 90, a lifelong resident of Dendron, died July 10, 1996, at Waverly Health Care Center in Waverly.
Mrs. Spratley was the daughter of the late Waverly S. and May Wilhemina Higgins Barrett. She was a member of the Dendron Christian Church, where she served as president of the Women's Fellowship, secretary of the church and taught Sunday School for the primary department for over 30 years. She served as past president and treasurer of the Dendron Community Club, was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Dendron Volunteer Fire Department, a past president of the Surry County Auxiliary, Patrick Henry Hospital and a life member of the Thomas Rolfe Branch, A.P.V.A. She was also an active member and past matron of the Laurel Chapter (NU)114, Order of the Eastern Star in Claremont. She graduated from Retreat Hospital in Richmond and was a member of the Alumnae Association. She was a registered nurse and worked as the Surry County Public Health nurse for over 18 years. She was the widow of Harry Wrenn Spratley Sr. and the mother of the late Harry Wrenn Spratley Jr.
She is survived by a son, John Barrett Spratley of Richmond; a daughter-in-law, Sandra C. Spratley of Richmond; a sister, Col. Elizabeth Barrett of Dendron; a granddaughter, Amy Keturah Spratley.
The funeral will be held at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield Chapel, Saturday at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Surry. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dendron Volunteer Fire Department or the Dendron Christian Church.
