Nannie Harvell Smith, 98, formerly of Wakefield, died Thursday, July 11, 1996, in Richmond.
Mrs. Smith was a native of Southampton County, and was the widow of William Durwood Smith, of Enfield, N.C. She made her home in Enfield for many years, where she taught in public schools. Upon retirement she lived in Wakefield. Since 1978, she had been a resident of the Lakewood Manor Baptist Retirement Community in Richmond.
Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Ransom D. and Nannie Branch Harvell. She attended the State Normal School in Farmville, Va. (now Longwood College), and completed additional studies at Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College), Wilson, N.C.; at East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C.; and at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N.C. She retired after 43 years of teaching in Virginia and North Carolina.
At the time of her death, Mrs. Smith was a member of Ridge Baptist Church, Richmond. She was a former member of the Wakefield Baptist Church, where she was active in the Women's Missionary Union, the WMU Prayer Group, and the Reese Sunday School class. In addition to her church activities, Mrs. Smith was a member of the Senior Woman's Club of Wakefield and the North Carolina Education Association.
Mrs. Smith is survived by a number of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
The funeral will be held in the Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, Monday at 2 p.m., with interment to follow in the Mill Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Isle of Wight County, Va. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lakewood Manor Retirement Benevolent Fund, Lakewood Manor, 1900 Lauderdale Drive, Richmond, Va. 23233, or to the Wakefield Baptist Church, Wakefield, Va. 23888.
