APPROACHING HURRICANE CUTS ENTHUSIASM FOR FISHING

Although the approach of Hurricane Bertha put a damper on fishing enthusiasm, some catches were reported along the Dare coast.

Kitty Hawk Pier anglers landed some tailor bluefish and croaker during the morning. Fishing interest waned in the afternoon because of gradually increasing winds and seas.

Avalon Pier reported bluefish and a few Spanish mackerel taken from the end of the pier throughout the morning. Most of the fish were landed on jiggers.

Small flounder and a few keeper flounder were caught by fishermen on Nags Head Pier most of the day. A few sea mullet also were taken.

A good run of spot developed on Jennette's Pier during the morning. Steady action was reported between 5 and 11 a.m. Scattered spot were landed the remainder of the day.

Croaker and pigfish were caught on Outer Banks Pier most of the morning. Afternoon action was slow.

No boats ventured out Thursday because of the effects of approaching Hurricane Bertha. Surf fishing also was at a standstill due to the weather.

Fishing should be good as soon as seas settle after the passage of Bertha.

The water temperature was 74.5 degrees Thursday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck - a dramatic increase from Thursday's 58.5 degrees. by CNB
