SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO DOCTOR-TO-BE

Donald V. Byars II, who recently finished his first year at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, has been awarded the $1,000 Hubert Kuehn Scholarship by the Chesapeake Medical Society.

The scholarship program was established in hope of luring promising young medical students back to their home after graduation. It is named for a Chesapeake radiologist who died in 1990.

Byars, 23, is a 1990 graduate of Great Bridge High School and a 1994 graduate of Old Dominion University's pre-med program.

He and his wife Kristin, a student at Virginia Wesleyan College, live in Great Bridge. Byars' stepfather and mother, Henry and Patricia Chamnes, also live in Great Bridge.

Byars expects to complete the doctor of medicine program in three years. Upon graduation, he will undertake about five years of residency.

During the summer, Byars has a job conducting molecular genetic research for the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk.

Dr. Patricia Raymond, president of the Chesapeake Medical Society when the award was presented, said, ``The society hopes that by assisting Chesapeake natives, they'll think kindly on coming back to Chesapeake to finish their medical career.''

Byars has no plans to abandon his hometown.

``I'll certainly live in Chesapeake,'' said the medical student. ``But where I practice remains to be seen.''

Byars said he would definitely practice somewhere in Hampton Roads. by CNB
