VIRGINIA BEACH - Beverly Randolph Middleton, 67, former member of the House of Delegates and a Commissioner of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, of the 1600 block of Wakefield Drive, died Friday, July 12, 1996.

He was born Sept. 7, 1928, in Norfolk County. He graduated from Norview High School and from Virginia Tech as an electrical engineer. He served as a captain in the Army. While he was a second lieutenant he was awarded a commendation from Queen Julianne of the Netherlands for his zealous and indefatigable assistance.

He is survived by his wife, Ernestine W. Middleton; his brother, E. George Middleton and wife Elizabeth; three sons, John Middleton and wife Judy, Barry Knight and wife Paula, Wayne Middleton; four daughters, Shannon Knight, Gale Dunlap and husband Frank, Beverly Middleton Hathaway and husband John, Terry Burton and husband Billy; and nine grandchildren.

Mr. Middleton retired as president of Middleton Construction Company. He was a licensed professional engineer in North Carolina and Virginia. He was a member of Society of Professional Engineers; past director of the Builders and Contractors Exchange; and chairman of the Joint Apprenticeship Committee of the Tidewater Electrical Industry from 1961 to 1974. He also was a member of the Bayside Presbyterian Church; was past president of the Suburban Kiwanis Club of which he was a member for over 30 years; was a member of the General Advisory Council for Vocational Education, City of Virginia Beach Schools; past president of Thoroughgood Civic League; and a member of the Royal Order of the Neptune Festival.

Besides being a member of the House of Delegates from 1968 to 1973, where he served on five committees: Appropriations, Education, Roads, Chesapeake Bay and its Tributaries, and Conservation and Natural Resources, he also was appointed by the governor as a member of Virginia Housing Study Commission and the State Board of Housing and Urban Development, both from 1972 to 1982.

Above all, his love was being very active in coaching little league football and basketball for eight years in the Bayside area and enjoying his relaxation time as an avid bird hunter and fisherman.

He donated his body to medical research but a memorial service celebrating his life will be held at Bayside Presbyterian Church, corner of Independence Blvd. and Ewell Road on Monday at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your favorite charity.
