Although Hurricane Bertha planted a wet, breezy kiss on Hampton Roads and Northeastern North Carolina, some anglers managed to record impressive catches in the past week.
While many planned trips were scrubbed because of high winds and lingering rough seas, officials managed to get in one day of the 15th annual Eastern Shore Marlin Tournament at Wachapreague, Va.
Fifteen to 18 boats headed offshore for the event Sunday. All but eight turned around because of rough seas.
While there were no winners in the billfish division, contestants caught a few tuna and a couple of small dolphin.
Jim Wallace on the charter boat Canyon Lady won the tuna division with a 90-pound bluefin boated by I. Lee Chapman of Richmond. Carey Roberts on the private boat Bozo II took the dolphin category with a 7-pound, 9-ounce catch by C.L. Marshall of Pocomoke, Md.
