Mary Betty Rodes, 88, of Virginia Beach Health Care Center, a longtime resident of Portsmouth, died at Virginia Beach General Hospital on Friday July 12, 1996.
Miss Rodes was born Aug. 30, 1907, in Albemarle County, a daughter of the late Edward Thomas and Mary Alberta Coiner Rodes. She taught school in the Portsmouth Public Schools for over 30 years and was a member of the Portsmouth Education Association, Virginia Education Association, National Education Association and Delta Kappa Gamma International. Miss Rodes was also a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Association of University Women. She was a long-time member of Trinity Episcopal Church of Portsmouth where she was active in the Altar Guild and the Women of the Church.
Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Berkley Walter Shelton of Virginia Beach; five nieces and nephews, Alberta S. Stornetta of Annapolis, Md., Howard T. Holden Jr. of Staunton, Dorothy H. Bumgardner of Staunton, Thomas W. Rodes of Burke and Nancy R. Dincalci of California; and a number of great-nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Mt. Moriah Church Cemetery at White Hall, by the Rev. Mrs. Jane Siglow. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. Hamrick Funeral Home, Staunton, Va., is handling arrangements.
