A tornado apparently touched down twice in the southern end of Gloucester County Monday night, damaging about 30 houses. There were no injuries reported, authorities said.
A driver saw a funnel cloud touch down about 7:30 p.m. in the Marshall Heights subdivision to the west of Old Highway 17, according to Gloucester County Sheriff's Capt. M.L. Nicely. The witness then saw the funnel cloud jump over Highway 17, move east and touch down again on Route 216 in Bena.
There were many trees down and sheds and roofs were damaged across the five mile area struck by the tornado. The path of the tornado was approximately an eighth of a mile wide, Nicely estimated.
