INJURED FIREFIGHTER GOES HOME FROM HOSPITAL

Fire lieutenant Jeffrey T. Messinger, who was injured last week while assisting at a three-vehicle accident, was released from Obici Hospital over the weekend.

Messinger, 38, was struck just after 10 p.m. July 8 by a passing van driven by George A. Weaver, 76, of the 1900 block of Carolina Road.

Messinger, a 22-year veteran assigned to fire headquarters, had bruised ribs and lungs, fire officials said. He was helping a rescue squad back up after an earlier accident injured four people.

Both accidents happened in the 1900 block of Carolina Road.

Freddie W. Klages Jr., 75, of the 700 block of Babbtown Road, was charged with reckless driving in the first accident.
