AFTER BEING SWEPT IN DH, TIDES START TRIP IN TOLEDO

Former Tides pitcher Don Florence allowed three hits in six innings and the Rochester Red Wings broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the sixth for a 6-1 victory and a doubleheader sweep over Norfolk Sunday night.

The nightcap began at 10:20 p.m. because of a two-hour ran delay which pushed the opener back to 8:15 p.m.

Norfolk (54-37), which was shutout in the opener 2-0, was swept for the first time in five doubleheaders this season.

The Tides combined for one run and seven hits in the twin bill, three hits coming from the bat of leftfielder Benny Agbayani.

``We faced Florence before and he wasn't that tough,'' Tides manager Bobby Valentine said.

Florence (4-2), who pitched in 41 games for the Tides last season, went into the game with a 6.11 ERA.

He allowed singles in the second, third and fourth but retired the side in order in his other three innings for Rochester (45-43).

Norfolk's lone run came on an run-scoring single by Chris Howard with two out in the seventh.

Juan Acevedo (4-7) allowed four runs on four hits and took the loss for Norfolk, which has a five-game lead over Columbus in the Western Division.

The Tides were off Monday before beginning a week-long road trip, starting with a three-game series against the Toledo Mud Hens tonight. by CNB
