A FINAL GOOD RIDDANCE TO BERTHA

Cheyney Cole cuts the remains of a Bradford Pear tree that was a

victim of Bertha. The tree fell in his yard but stretched onto

Crystal Circle in the Bay Colony section of Virginia Beach.

By 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, tourists and residents were on the beach,

checking out the surf and what Bertha left behind. Some beach

erosion was noticeable.

Lifeguard Lee Moore had his hands full keeping people out of the

rough surf and strong undertow on Saturday morning.

Hurricane Bertha was a tamer beast here than people had feared, but

she left her mark on Virginia Beach. Even though she had lost much

of her punch during her journey over North Carolina and into

Virginia on Friday and early Saturday, her destructive winds and

churning surf crashed trees and chewed sand as she blew on through

and out of town.
