HANDCUFFED MAN ESCAPES FROM POLICE CAR

A handcuffed man, accused of earlier stuffing a bag - and his socks - with stolen merchandise, eluded police Tuesday after escaping from a locked police car.

The man, who had not been identified, had candy bars stuffed in his socks when he was arrested after a minor struggle in the 800 block of Carolina Road. Police said he carried a bag containing more candy, cigarettes, wine and medicine shoplifted from a nearby 7-Eleven.

Taken by police back to the store, his hands were handcuffed behind his back and he was belted into the front seat of the locked car . He was to be charged with petty larceny.

``That usually holds them,'' police spokesman Mike Simpkins said.

The man escaped after officers went into the store to talk with the manager.

The alleged theft occurred about 11 a.m., Simpkins said. The store manager, who had called police, pointed out the man as the man walked down Carolina Road.

The man was described as black, about 30 years old, with a shaved head. He is about 5 feet 10, 160 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a black-and-white reversible jacket, brown pants, black work boots and may be wearing handcuffs. He has a fresh abrasion on his forehead.

Police found a bicycle near the store that Simpkins said they believe the man was riding before the robbery.
