JAPANESE WOMAN KNIFED; U.S. SAILOR QUESTIONED

A man with a knife slashed the throat of a Japanese woman in southwestern Japan early Tuesday, police said. A news report said an American sailor was being questioned in the case.

The woman, Kaori Tanigawa, was attacked as she walked on a road in Sasebo, a port city that includes a U.S. naval base, said police spokesman Fumitetsu Matsushita.

Her purse was stolen and later recovered with about $92 missing. She is expected to survive.

Kyodo News agency reported that U.S. military officials and investigators of the Nagasaki police were questioning a U.S. sailor, who denied involvement. by CNB
