CONCERT TONIGHT TO HONOR `JUNIE' LANCASTER

A Tidewater Winds concert Friday night at Willett Hall in Portsmouth will honor the late Arthur J. ``Junie'' Lancaster Jr.

Lancaster is the man who founded Coleman's Nursery and the popular Winter Wonderland and who gave the Children's Museum a million-dollar collection of trains and toys. Also a man who loved music, Lancaster was an ardent supporter and board member of the Tidewater Winds.

The program will feature Broadway tunes and circus marches especially loved by Lancaster. A special tribute will be an audience rendition of ``Smile - Sing a Song,'' Lancaster's favorite song.

The audience will be led by Betty Burnell, director of the Portsmouth Museums. Commerce Bank, along with the city's museums and the Kiwanis Club, will sponsor the concert.

Lancaster, 77, of Suffolk, died last February after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. He had been active in many community projects and was named Portsmouth's First Citizen for 1990.

One special section of the program for the Lancaster tribute is called ``Circus Time for Junie'' and will feature ``The Purple Carnival'' by Harry L. Alford, ``The Circus King'' by C.E. Duble, ``Thunder and Blazes'' by Julius Fucik and ``The Circus Bee'' by Henry Fillmore.

Matthew Dunsmore will be the euphonium soloist for ``Carnival of Venice'' by Herbert L. Clarke, and Joe Southerly will portray John Philip Sousa while the band plays Sousa's ``Washington Post'' march.

The program also will include songs from ``Sound of Music'' by Richard Rodgers and ``No, No Nanette'' by Vincent Youmans, music by Jerome Kern and Duke Ellington and the sounds of Glenn Miller.

The Tidewater Winds, under the direction of Sidney Berg, give concerts each summer in Willett Hall. The 7:30 p.m. program Friday is free and open to the public.

Concerts by the group for the week beginning July 21 will feature Alberto Asercion, clarinet soloist. Free concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Wells Theater in Norfolk on July 21, at Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake on July 22, at Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach on July 23, at 24th Street Park in Virginia Beach on July 24 and at Western Branch Middle School in Chesapeake on July 26.

The next performance at Willett Hall will be a ``Broadway Spectacular'' on Aug. 2. ILLUSTRATION: File photo
