IF YOU'RE A FISH, IT WAS A GOOD DAY TO BE OFF THE BANKS

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was slow Wednesday.

Kitty Hawk Pier anglers caught scattered spot, croaker, pigfish, and a few sea mullet.

Some bluefish were taken on Avalon Pier early in the morning, and small bottom fish were caught the remainder of the day.

Nags Head Pier reported a few spot, croaker and sea mullet landed.

Fishing was slow on Jennette's Pier, with only a few croaker taken.

Outer Banks Pier also reported little substantial action. A few spot, croaker and small mullet were caught during the morning.

On Hatteras Island, fishermen on Rodanthe Pier landed small bottom fish and gray trout during the morning, and a few bluefish in the afternoon.

Small spot, croaker and plenty of rays were taken by anglers on Avon Pier.

Some nice gray trout, a few sea mullet, small croaker and spot were landed on Frisco Pier.

Fair numbers of croaker were hauled from the surf along the beach from Corolla to Oregon Inlet.

Croaker, some spot, a few speckled trout and small bluefish were beached around Oregon Inlet.

Small bottom fish were taken along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton during the morning, and bluefish and some pompano were caught on the afternoon.

A few puppy drum were landed early Wednesday morning at Cape Point. Pompano, flounder and plenty of croaker were landed along the beach north of Cape Point during the afternoon.

Spanish mackerel and bluefish were caught by surfcasters around Hatteras Inlet Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. Croaker and spot were landed along the beach from Frisco to False Point Wednesday.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was slow Wednesday, with scattered bluefish, a few mackereland a cobia landed. Several cobia were seen.

Headboats in the area caught a few bottom fish.

Charters of Oregon Inlet reported good catches of dolphin and fair catches of tuna. Boats caught eight or nine yellowfin tuna each, while trolling between the 40630 and the 40640 Loran lines.

A white marlin was released by the Tuna Fever and a sailfish by the Gannet.

Dolphin fishing was good in the Gulf Stream off Hatteras. A few tuna and wahoo also were taken.

Sailfish were released by Walt Spruill's Hatteras Fever, the Chaser and the Citation. A blue marlin was released by the Sea Creature. Most of the action was in deep water.

The water temperature was 59 degrees Wednesday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 80 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
