GIRL, 13, PLACES 6TH IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

Chesapeake's Courtney Pickford, 13, placed sixth in the international Coca-Cola Youth Bowling Championships at Columbus, Ohio, in the 12-over girls handicap division.

Rhiannon Allan, 18, of Virginia Beach finished 34th in the 18-over girls scratch category.

Both won state championships earlier.

Pickford, competing in the international finals against 71 others, had a handicap series of 2,466 in the 12 qualifying games to move into the final 24. She then had a 1,783 in eight games that determined the four finalists, barely missing with a sixth-place finish.

Pickford is a 122-average bowler.

Allan, a 184-average bowler, vied against 60; 24 made the first cut. She had 2,178 for her 12 games.

Chesapeake's Amber Sawyer was third in the 12-under state meet and earned a $235 scholarship.

The champions in the international competition earned $3,000 scholarships. The meet at Columbus included 50 state champions at each level, six winners in Canadian provinces, Puerto Rico champions and winners at military commands in the European, Far Eastern and Caribbean zones. by CNB
