U.S. Rep. Owen B. Pickett is accepting applications from Norfolk and Virginia Beach youths interested in serving as a page during the fall session of the House of Representatives.
Only 66 pages serve the 435 Representatives in the House, and this marks the first time in Pickett's 10 years on Capitol Hill that he has been able to select a page from Hampton Roads.
The application deadline is Aug. 12. Applicants are limited to youths who will be juniors in high school this fall and who live in the Second District, which encompasses most of Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Applicants must be at least 16 years old and must have achieved at least a 3.0 grade point average based on four major courses in school, not electives.
Among other duties, pages will work directly with members of the House of Representatives, handling correspondence and legislative materials. Pages will attend the House Page School beginning at 6:45 a.m. each weekday morning (and occasionally on Saturdays) for studies in mathematics, English, social studies, science, French, Spanish and a work experience course.
All expenses, including lodging and meals, are provided.
