LETTERS TO THE EDITOR-VIRGINIA BEACH BEACON

City responding to pile ups

The overwhelming response that we have seen at our drop-off Recycling Centers has eased concerns that Virginia Beach residents would lessen their commitment to recycling in the absence of curbside pickups. We would like to thank the citizens of Virginia Beach for affirming their dedication to recycling programs and to assure you that we are listening to your concerns.

Our Recycling Centers have been overflowing with materials. We are moving as fast as possible to increase the capacity, as well as the servicing of these centers to meet the demands created by this overwhelming participation by our citizens. We have adjusted the procedures, and increased the frequency of service at the sites. Our contractor was able to catch up with the collections so that the sites were available to collect more materials.

We have placed additional containers for paper collection at 23 sites with the largest volumes. We have assigned staff to monitor and clean up the sites. We will continue to improve convenience and accessibility as we fine-tune the program to meet the needs of our residents. We are the first community in the area to offer recycling of all plastic materials, including plastic bags, at these sites.

We will continue our progress toward making recycling more convenient for our citizens and we are actively pursuing an automated program of curbside collection that we hope to have in place by next July.

We appreciate your patience and understanding while we work through the snags that come with new programs. Please call us at 430-2450 to report concerns about any of our recycling centers.

To find out which center is nearest you, call the Beach-Line automated telephone message service at 427-3580, Ext. 349.
