JEANNE E. PHILLIPS

Jeanne Eaton Phillips, of College Park, died July 17, 1996, in a Virginia Beach hospital.

She was reared in Raleigh by her parents, Mrs. Minetta Gaylor Eaton and the late James W. Eaton. Mrs. Phillips graduated from Washington High School. She received a B.A. degree from Morgan State University, Baltimore, Md., and a M.A. degree from Columbia University, N.Y. She did further studies at other leading universities. For many years, Mrs. Phillips worked as an attendance counselor in Cambria Heights, N.Y. Upon her retirement, she and her late husband, Thomas Phillips, moved to Virginia Beach. She was an active member of New Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk, where she served as a member of the Board of Christian Education and chaired the graduation committee. She enjoyed working in many other auxiliaries of the church. Mrs. Phillips touched the lives of many youth as well as many adults throughout her life. She served on various boards and civic organizations, including: Norfolk Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.; Virginia Beach Chapter of Delicados and the National Association of University Women, N.Y. Chapter.

Survivors include her mother, Minetta Gaylor Eaton of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Dr. Faye Y. Eaton of Macon, Ga.; an aunt, Mrs. Odessa Gaylor Pretlow of Rocky Mount, N.C.; and a close friend of the Phillips family, Mrs. Precious Carson of Norfolk.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in New Calvary Baptist Church, 800 East Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk, Dr. Gilbert Campbell Jr. officiating. Viewing will be Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m. in Hale Funeral Home. Ceremonies will be conducted by the Delicados and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. from 6 to 7 p.m. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Hampton National Cemetery, Hampton. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
