More than 400 teens from church groups around the nation will arrive today to repair homes for a week.
Organized by Group Publishing Inc. in Colorado, the Group Workcamp volunteers pay their own way to spend part of their summer vacation fixing and painting houses for the needy.
The Elizabeth City project is one of 24 nationwide. Group Publishing has organized Group Workcamps for 19 years, including projects in Ahoskie and Edenton. The River City Community Development Corp. coordinated the Elizabeth City project.
``Residents are very receptive about the work,'' said Emil Slane, set-up director for the Elizabeth City group of volunteers. ``Sometimes you get mixed responses. Some people are more reserved and not sure what to expect. I see a lot of community involvement here.''
Adult set-up crews arrived last Sunday. Teams of five youths and one adult will work on about 60 homes in Elizabeth City and Pasquotank County. Some of the areas of focus will be McMorrine Street, South Road Street, Sawyertown and Weeksville areas. Each teen paid $375, which covers expenses and pays half of the $30,000 needed for building supplies. The Elizabeth City Neighborhood Corporation paid the remaining $15,000. All supplies are bought locally. ILLUSTRATION: Graphic
