I am grateful for Mal Vincent's recent article regarding the Generic Theater's New Plays for Dog Days Festival. No article about the festival can be complete, however, without mentioning the woman who singlehandedly created and produced the festival in its first two years, former Managing Director Betty Xander.
It was Betty who established the play-reading committee and chose me to head it this past year, and Betty who hired her successor, this year's producer, Jeannie Burns Hardie. Without Betty's ongoing vision and drive, both our jobs would have been much more difficult. I credit the festival, and Betty, with the resurgence of summer theater in Norfolk.
