Irvin Lee Barnes, of the Campostella section of Norfolk, departed this life on July 18, 1996.
Irvin Lee Barnes, born Jan. 20, 1938, in Norfolk, Va., was one of nine children born to the late Rufus Barnes and Mary J. Barnes. He attended the public schools in Norfolk where he graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1957. Mr. Barnes served in the United States Army Medical Service Corp. and performed duties during the Korean conflict. Upon his loyal and faithful service for three years, he received an honorable discharge.
Irvin L. Barnes was a member of the International Longshoreman Association Local 1248 for approximately 30 years and retired as a Stevedore Foreman. He supervised several employees and was a dedicated worker for many years. Mr. Barnes was formerly married to Annie Taylor-Barnes for 25 years. Of this union, two children were born, Darryl M. Barnes of Jersey City, N.J., and Anita Barnes-Jackson of Norfolk. Irvin was a loving father and husband who worked hard to support his family and provided the best for them. He was a serious-minded person who enjoyed doing carpentry work, crabbing and fishing.
Mr. Barnes is survived by two sons, Darryl and Irvin; a daughter, Anita; his mother, Mrs. Mary J. Barnes of Bowie, Md.; three sisters, Ruth B. Nixon of Bowie, Md., Mary L. Barnes of Long Island, N.Y., Dorothy M. Hargett of Norfolk; five brothers, Rufus R. Barnes, Samuel Barnes and William C. Barnes of Norfolk, Alvin Barnes of Bowie, Md., and Edward Barnes of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three nieces, Tamra Grant of Virginia Beach, Terri Richardson of Bridgeport, Conn., Tracy Bass of Stamford, Conn.; a nephew, Richard V. Barnes of Virginia Beach; and a host of cousins, great-nephews, great-nieces, neighbors and friends.
The funeral will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Anthony Moses in Graves Funeral Chapel. Burial will be private. There will be a wake service Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 for services.
