POLICE OFFICERS ASSAULTED

Three police officers were assaulted and one of them injured in two separate incidents over the weekend.

Officer Dean M. Smith had a broken nose after a man he had arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence struck him at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail about 4:20 a.m. Saturday, said police spokesman Mike Simpkins. James E. Porter, 23, of the 23200 block of Sunlight Drive, Courtland, was charged with malicious wounding of a police officer after the confrontation.

In the second incident, two officers were assaulted Sunday about 10 p.m. while they were trying to arrest Kobie V. Graham, 20, at her home on a disorderly-conduct case. Graham, who lives in the 1000 block of Custis Road, was charged with two counts of assault on a police officer; resisting arrest; and disorderly conduct.

Officer W.J. Sanker was struck in the chin, chest and throat. He had a small cut on his left thumb.

Officer L.A. Callis was also assaulted but was not injured.
