Rufus Dal Smith, 84, of the 2200 block of Battery Park Road, died July 21, 1996, in a Portsmouth hospital.
Mr. Smith, a native of Johnston County, N.C., retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard Shop (NU)26 as a welder. He was a member of Cradock Presbyterian Church; Fellowship Lodge (NU)84, Smithfield, N.C.; Cradock Royal Arch Chapter, Portsmouth; Scottish Rite Bodies; Khedive Temple; and a member of the American Association of Retired People. He was a Marine Corps veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Howell Smith; a son, Dennis Howell Smith of Milan, Mich.; a sister, Mariette S. Everette of Pine Town, N.C.; a brother, Edwin S. Smith of Four Oaks, N.C.; two granddaughters, Amy Smith of Chesapeake, Ingrid Kitchen of Elizabeth City, N.C.; and three great-grandsons.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday by the Revs. Richard Lovingood and John Ashenfelder in Loving Funeral Home Chapel with Masonic Rites conducted by Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge (NU)178. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the funeral home today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions to the C.I.F. Fund of Cradock Presbyterian Church, 39 Afton Parkway, Portsmouth, 23702.
