Aubrey P. Johnson Jr., of the 8900 block of River Crescent, died Tuesday July 23, 1996, in a local hospital.
Mr. Johnson was a native of Portsmouth. He graduated in the class of 1934 1/2 from Woodrow Wilson High School. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a bombardier. He was the purchasing agent for the City of Portsmouth from 1946 to 1950, city auditor from 1950-58, and city manager from 1958 until his retirement in 1974. During his tenure as city manager the birth and development of a port facility, the Portsmouth Marine Terminal, came into being, many capital improvement projects were completed, and the City's boundaries were extended through two annexations. He was an elder in St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Erma H. Johnson; two daughters, Mary Sue J. Roessor of Portsmouth, Alice J. Blackwell of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; four grandchildren, William Baldwin Bynum Jr. of Portsmouth, Mary Anderson Perkins of Kill Devil Hills, Byron A. Perkins IV of Palm Beach, Fla., Lea B. Perkins of Chesapeake; three brothers, William H. Johnson and Charles B. Johnson of Durham, N.C., and Clay N. Johnson of Portsmouth.
A memorial service will be held in St. Andrew Presbyterian Church Thursday at 11 a.m. by Dr. Roger Jackle. The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church or the Diabetes Foundation. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, is handling arrangements.
