EXTERMINATION PLANNED: Mosquito spraying at Craney Island and nearby Churchland neighborhoods is scheduled for one of five days this week - depending on the weather.
Diana L. Bailey of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers office said a time frame of July 24-28 was to take into account the recent afternoon thunderstorms in the area.
On one of those days between 7 p.m. and sunset, a specially equipped Air Force C-130 from Youngstown Air Reserve Base in Ohio will spray Dibrom over the area to control mosquitoes.
The plan to spray insecticide in the area came about after a dramatic increase in mosquitoes last year. Dibrom leaves no visible residue and is not considered harmful to humans or animals, except for bees. Residents allergic to the substance should stay indoors for at least 30 minutes after the spraying.
The spraying will cover Craney Island Dredged Material Area, Craney Island Fuel Supply and Craney Island Coast Guard, as well as Churchland residential areas.
