FORMER NSU STAR DIES OF HEART ATTACK

Charles Napoleon Bonaparte Jr., a former basketball standout at Norfolk State University, died of a heart attack at age 49.

Bonaparte, a social studies teacher at Huguenot High School in Richmond, died at his home Saturday, said his wife, DeNyce Bonaparte.

Bonaparte played basketball at NSU in the late 1960s with Bobby Dandridge, who went on to star in the NBA.

``I still have yet to see anybody shoot like him,'' Dandridge said of Bonaparte, who was his rival when they attended different high schools in Richmond and his roommate at NSU. ``But most of all, he was a joyful person, just excited about everything.''

Bonaparte played for Norfolk State from 1965-69, scoring 1,259 points and averaging 18.2 per game for his career. The Spartans were 90-16 during his years with the school.

Bonaparte is survived by his wife, two daughters, two sisters and a brother. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
