If you're looking for a way to beat the heat on Thursdays after work this month, try heading over to the Chrysler Museum for some cool tunes and socializing while browsing through artistic masterpieces.
And it's all for a good cause.
For the sixth year, the museum's support group of young professionals, For Art's Sake, is sponsoring the ``Cool It at the Chrysler'' concert series on Thursday evenings featuring some of Hampton Roads' best-known musical groups. Also sponsored by Port Folio magazine and The Point 94.9 FM radio, the series draws about 300 people at each concert.
The money raised from admission fees goes toward supporting the changing exhibits at the Chrysler. In 1995, For Art's Sake raised $5,000 for the museum, and already in 1996, the group has donated $7,500.
``We're hoping to give the museum another check for almost that amount in the fall,'' noted Susan Speers Hume, a Norfolk stockbroker who serves as co-chairwoman of the concert series.
Comprised of 150 young professionals, For Art's Sake works to broaden the museum's exposure, increase membership, raise funds and ``have a great time,'' noted Hume. In addition to the concert series, the group sponsors members-only parties and other social events throughout the year.
The concert series, however, is its primary fund-raiser.
The series runs through July.
This week, The Blind Venetians, an acoustic rock band, will perform from 6 to 9 p.m. in the museum's Huber Court. The Rhythm & Blues All-Stars will be featured Aug. 1.
Tickets are $3 for members of For Art's Sake, and $6 for the general public. They can be purchased at the door or at Artifax locations in Ghent and Hilltop North. Munchies are included with the price of admission. ILLUSTRATION: Blind Venetians, an acoustic rock band, will perform
