Staff writer Jon Glass' featured report, ``The Class of '96'' (July 6) was a refreshing flashback into the world of Eva M. Tynes, an individual whom history normally would not have acknowledged if not for the special efforts of her granddaughter, who preserved her yellowed graduation certificate, and Glass, who brought it to public notice.
Because many laudatory comments and calls were directed to me instead of to the reporter who researched and wrote the article, I congratulate him while also calling attention to a mistake in his story. Gen. Samuel Chapman Armstrong, a founder of the institution now called Hampton University, was white, not black.
