HARRY L. JONES

Col. Harry Lane Jones, U.S. Army retired, 77, of the 500 block of Foxgate Quarter, died Monday, July 22, 1996, in a Portsmouth hospital.

Col. Jones was born in Knoxville, Tenn., and was the son of the late Oscar Steven and Catherine Clark Jones. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Christine Jones. He retired as a colonel in the U.S. Army in 1974 after 35 1/2 years of service, serving in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He was a member of Harvest Assembly of God, Gideons International, the Airline Owners and Pilots Association, and the Army Aviation Association of America.

Survivors include his children, Christine Jones Anderson of Chesapeake, a teacher at First Colonial High School, Deputy Fire Chief of Fairfax County Kenneth L. Jones of Herndon, Va. and Lt. Col. Mark S. Jones, U.S. Army retired, of Newport News; a sister, Bonnie Keel of Homossa Springs, Fla.; a brother, Robert Jones of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at Harvest Assembly of God by the Rev. David Odessa on Friday at 11 a.m. Interment will be at 1 p.m. in Hampton National Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, today from 7 to 9 p.m. The family suggests that memorials be made either to the American Cancer Society or the Living Bible Program of Gideons International.
