Here's a look at some of the action from the July 15 meeting of the Chesapeake School Board: New officers
Barbara B. Head was re-elected as chairman of the School Board and Roderic A. Taylor as vice chairman at the board's first meeting with fully-elected members.
Head, 45, kept her seat in a 5-4 vote over board member James Wheaton. L. Thomas Bray, Thomas L. Mercer, Taylor, Patricia P. Willis and Head voted for Head, while Allen H. Goode Jr., James M. Reeves, Jeffrey A. Rowland and Wheaton voted for Wheaton.
The voting pattern were identical in the election of Taylor, 64, in a 5-4 decision over Reeves.
The board first elected Head and Taylor into their respective spots in May, when then-chairman Maury Brickhouse resigned from his seat before his term expired in June.
The board also made the following appointments:
Edward Hughes was reappointed as clerk of the board.
Patricia Everton was reappointed as deputy clerk.
Superintendent W. Randolph Nichols will continue as agent to the board, a role that puts the superintendent in charge of the system's financial matters.
Fred Cabler Jr., the new assistant superintendent for budget and finance, was appointed deputy agent. Meeting schedule
The board approved several calendars, including its meeting schedule for the year and dates to look at its Capital Improvement Plan and attendance zone adjustments for Deep Creek Middle School and the new middle school being built on Cedar Road.
School Board meetings will be held at 7 p.m. on the second and last Monday of each month, at the school administration building on Cedar Road.
The schedule for the Capital Improvement Plan is as follows:
Monday, Aug. 26 - Initial presentation
Monday, Sept. 9 - Public hearing and work session
Monday, Sept. 16 - Work session
Monday, Sept. 30 - Public hearing and final vote
The attendance zone meetings will be held according to the following schedule:
Monday, Sept. 9 - Presentation to the School Board (plan will be sent to parents in August school orientation packet)
Monday, Oct. 14 - Work session
Monday, Oct. 28 - First public hearing and work session
Wednesday, Nov. 6 - Second public hearing
Monday, Nov. 25 - Final vote School construction
Construction on Cedar Road Elementary School is on target and should be completed by the time the school is scheduled to open in September. Landscaping and heating system work remains to be done.
Work on some areas of Hickory High School remains behind schedule, but the school will open on time and class schedules won't be hampered by ongoing construction, said Principal Linda Byrd.
While the auditorium isn't expected to be completed until the end of December, and several areas, including the gymnasium and chorus and band rooms, might not be finished until mid-October, students won't go without.
``We have 1,550 students, and we have a building being built for over 2,000,'' Byrd said. ``So we do have the space to house those classes. . . . Instead of starting with gym classes, we'll start with health classes. . . . Instruction is not going to suffer because of the nonavailability of particular classrooms.'' by CNB
