I enjoyed ``Beach woman gives birds of peace to Olympics'' (MetroNews, July 22) recognizing the beauty of this year's Olympic opening ceremonies in which 100 kites, created by Marguerite E. Stankus to look like white doves, were flown to represent peace.
This is a tremendous improvement over the use in previous years of live doves. Many of the doves, when released, became disoriented, flew into the Olympic torch and burned to death.
The use of Ms. Stankus' marvelous kites to symbolize peace created a more-meaningful statement than endangering the lives of innocent birds.
