State marine fisheries officials opened a 290-acre area along Hatteras Island to shellfish harvesting this week.
Waters from the shore north of Buxton at 35-16-44 north, 75-31-05 west through Bald Point to a point on Buxton's shoreline at 35-16-24 north, 75-32-12 west and along the shoreline across the entrance to all creeks, canals and tributaries to an area east of Brooks Point at 35-15-48 north, 75-35-06 west are open to fishermen.
Several areas along Hatteras Island, however, are closed to oystering and clamming - including those west of the Hatteras Ferry Landing to a point in the ferry channel; waters near the entrance to Sandy Bay; creeks, canals and tributaries between Durant Point and a point on the south shore of Joe Sour Creek; and waters east of a line from Joe Sour Creek to a point at Brooks Point.
Other Outer Banks areas closed to people wishing to take oysters, clams or mussels include: 75 acres along Mill Creek; all of Rodanthe Boat Harbor; waters in Salvo Harbor; waters in Avon Harbor from Beacon 8 to the westernmost tip of the north shore; and waters in Askins Creek upstream of a line drawn across the mouth of the creek.
