IN CELEBRATION of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Newport News, a festival of fine and performing arts is being held today on the grounds of the Mariners' Museum and the adjacent Peninsula Fine Arts Center.
``Jubilee on the James'' includes activities and special exhibits inside both facilities, plus a fat schedule of outdoor events. All programs are free; admission to the Mariners' has been reduced to $1 for today only.
Outdoors, local arts groups will sing, act and play music. A juried show featuring 35 Virginia artists is part of the package, with announcements of the winners at 3 p.m. The juror is famed Peninsula painter Barclay Sheaks, who will sign posters inside the arts center, where a show of his paintings is on view.
Through Sept. 21, the center is featuring ``Living a History: 100 Years to Date,'' a collection of shows - Sheaks' included - honoring the city's centennial.
There will be plenty of family entertainment, from a Civil War-era encampment to remote-controlled model boat races on nearby Lake Maury. Hands-on workshops for kids include making masks, hats, postcards and sailboats. The schedule features area arts groups funded by the Newport News Arts Commission, sponsors of the festival with the city's Centennial Commission.
Here's the lineup: Virginia Symphony (10 a.m.), Young Audiences (10:40 a.m.), Chamber Ballet (11:20 a.m.), Virginia Choral Society (noon), Williamsburg Symphonia (12:40 p.m.), Christopher Newport University (1:20 p.m.), Resolute Ensemble (2 p.m.), Peninsula Community Theater (2:55 p.m.), Sweet Adelines (3:35 p.m.), U.S. Continental Army Band's Brass Quintet (4:15 p.m.).
