SUFFOLK BOY, 15, HURT IN CRASH WHILE DRIVING ALONE

A teenager, who was driving alone with only a learner's permit, failed to negotiate a curve about a mile from his home near Whaleyville Friday afternoon and was injured when he was thrown from his vehicle.

Earl H. Broadbent III, 15, of the 600 block of Little Fork Road was flown by Sentara Nightingale helicopter ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital,

Broadbent, who was driving a 1993 Jeep Cherokee, was not wearing a seat belt, said Officer W.T. Phippins. The accident happened about 2:39 p.m. on Whaley Street just west of Great Fork Road.

The teenager hit a small pine tree and had head injuries, Phippins said.

He was lying unconscious in a field when Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad and Whaleyville Fire Department arrived. They provided emergency care until Nightingale landed. by CNB
