Jill Barnes-Armstrong, a 32-year-old Portsmouth mother, was second runner-up in the Mrs. United States competition held this week in Las Vegas.
Barnes-Armstrong was among 52 contestants who competed in the five-day event that included interview, swimsuit and evening-gown competition.
Kim LaPlante, 28, of Seattle won the title and Michele Leach of Loganville, Ga., was first runner-up.
Barnes-Armstrong, a former Portsmouth police dispatcher, won the Mrs. Virginia-United States competition in Hampton in April. She was runner-up in the state competition in 1993.
She and her husband, Mike Armstrong, a detective with the Portsmouth Police Department, have two daughters, Taylor and Meghan.
She is the daughter of former Portsmouth mayor Jack P. Barnes and the late Minnie S. Barnes.
Other runners-up in the national competition were Sheryl Lee Wilson of Provo, Utah, and Renee Smith of Fayetteville, N.C. by CNB
